About

Scholarships provide access for students to attend DePauw University. Throughout DePauw’s history, alumni have given back to their alma mater so that future generations can receive scholarships and attend our liberal arts institution. From the Rector Scholarship that was established 100 years ago to the Ruth Clark and Philip Holton Scholarships to DePauw’s annual named scholarships, alumni say “thank you” by opening doors for future students to attend DePauw. And it makes a difference. Student debt among DePauw graduates is the second-lowest among all Indiana colleges and well below the national average. Philanthropy directed towards scholarships is key to student access.

Rector Scholarship and scholars celebrated this weekend

We welcome 262 Rector Scholar alumni and friends at DePauw this weekend to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Edward and Lucy Rector’s gift establishing DePauw’s historic scholarship. Rector Scholarship Centennial events will culminate on Saturday in a Meharry Hall keynote conversation with Lee Hamilton '52, a Rector Scholar alumnus and 34-year member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Rector Scholarship has helped more than 4,000 talented students gain access to a DePauw education. Many of them have gone on to be among the university’s most distinguished alumni. Throughout this centennial year, Rector Scholar alumni have been giving back to strengthen the Rector endowment to extend opportunities for future generations of top scholars, as shown in last week’s story on a gift from Tim Solso ‘69.

Thank you to all of our donors who have made gifts to open doors for DePauw students. As of today, 163 donors have made gifts totaling $63,467. Whether it is through the Rector Scholarship or another scholarship fund at DePauw, your support makes a difference.

Every gift opens a door

On the 100th anniversary Tuesday of Edward Rector’s gift to provide scholarships to DePauw University students, alumnus Tim Solso ’69 gave $1.5 million to the Rector Scholarship Endowment. Since the April 30, 1919, gift, more than 4,000 DePauw graduates have been awarded Rector scholarships. Many of them are among the university’s most distinguished alumni.

Solso’s gift, made as the university plans to celebrate the Rector Scholarship May 10-12, brings the ongoing campaign for the endowment close to its goal of $14 million in new commitments. If the goal is reached, the endowment will total $40 million, enough to extend full-tuition scholarships to 10 students a year for the next 100 years.

While major gifts create significant programs such as the Rector Scholarship, everyday heroes make gifts at every level to support student scholarship. Last year, donors of gifts up to $999 cumulatively gave more than $500,000 — or enough to open the doors for 100 students at DePauw.
